Best thing I ate: Tandoori pork ribs and chili-infused chicken, family style - OCRegister

I’ve heard it said often that spicy foods boost the immune system. Just in case that might be even slightly true, I’ve been eating chicken vindaloo from Clay Oven in Irvine. My lips have been on fire for two days. Curried butternut squash helps with that. It has a sweet, creamy, cooling effect that counteracts the burn. Sadly, I ran out of squash before I finished the vindaloo.

Clay Oven, a longstanding Indian restaurant in Irvine, recently introduced family-style takeout packages. The family packs start at $68 and are meant to serve at least four people. If you want pick and choose the specific dishes that go into your package, the price jumps to $110. That’s still a great deal. In addition to the vindaloo and squash, I got mine with the restaurant’s signature “black cobra” tandoori chicken (not as spicy as it sounds), mango-ginger-glazed baby back ribs (sweet and messy), chicken tikka masala (seriously good) and a bunch of vegetables, chutneys and garlic naan. I couldn’t be happier.

I think my house might smell like curry for the next 20 years, and I’m good with that.
