Roaming Rooster, the D.C. company that has built a loyal local following for turning free-range chicken breasts into a variety of buttermilk brined, fried poultry sandwiches, has signed a lease for a restaurant space on U Street NW and could start selling food in the neighborhood as early as this week.

Co-founder Michael Habtemariam says Roaming Rooster has started construction inside the building at 1301 U Street NW, which TaKorean vacated in October 2018. The company hopes to have a carryout operation set up there by mid-August or September. He says a Roaming Rooster food truck will begin parking outside the new location by late this week or early next week. The truck will offer online ordering for pickup and delivery through Uber Eats.

Since revving up its first food truck in 2015, Roaming Rooster has grown to four trucks and opened a standalone store in Woodridge (3176 Bladensburg Road NE). Before the novel coronavirus pandemic, the company capitalized on a national obsession for fried chicken sandwiches sparked a much-hyped version from Popeyes that hit the market. Habtemariam and his brother, Biniam, were born in Ethiopia and lived in Ottawa, Canada, before moving to he District. Hareg Mesfin, Biniam’s wife, is the third partner in the company. In a review praising the sandwiches, Washington Post columnist Tim Carman says the family’s East African heritage becomes apparent in the potent portion of spice include in the hottest option of sandwiches that come plain, Buffalo style, with honey butter, or Nashville hot style.

Roaming Rooster also recently signed on as a vendor for the developing Western Market food hall in Foggy Bottom. Michael Habtemariam says Roaming Rooster has bought two more trucks that are being outfitted in New Jersey.

On U Street and inside Western Market, Habtemariam says the plan is to keep the menu simple. In addition to the sandwiches, Roaming Rooster sells a fried chicken plate, salads, and chicken tenders. The company is working on adding milkshakes in classic flavors and developing biscuits for fried chicken breakfast sandwiches.

“We want to keep it the way it is right now,” Habtemariam says. “We have a great product.”
