Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken, a popular chain based in Memphis, is set to open its first Arizona restaurants in Mesa and Phoenix.

The restaurant is best known for its crispy fried chicken, available as dark and white meat, served with options including mac n' cheese, seasoned fries and fried pickles.

A commercial permit for the first of the two Valley restaurants, located at 212 W. Main Street in Mesa is still in review, according to public records. The street-front building in downtown Mesa shares the same block as Oro Brewing Company and Worth Takeaway.

Construction at Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken in Mesa is expected to begin sometime in August, with the restaurant opening sometime toward the end of 2020, said Paul Girardeau, the permit applicant. The Phoenix restaurant is a month behind the Mesa restaurant on the timeline, he added.

What is Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken?

The first brick-and-mortar version of Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken began in 1973 as Maggie’s Short Orders in Mason, Tennessee, about 40 miles east of Memphis. Founders Napoleon “Na” Vanderbilt and his wife Maggie got their start years before that, however, selling fried chicken between two slices of white bread, served out the back door of a tavern, according to the restaurant's website.

When Vanderbilt's son Vernon “Gus” Bonner took over the family restaurant, he renamed the restaurant but carried on the same tradition. The restaurant in Mason still stands today.

Wendy McCrory, a fan who opened the Memphis location, took over the chain in 2014 and has since expanded Gus's to 30 locations across 14 states. It's unclear yet whether the Phoenix and Mesa restaurants will be franchise-owned or company-owned.
