Customs Border Patrol officers and agriculture specialists said they encountered a different kind of contraband at the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge on Wednesday: 201 pounds of pork.

The pork was found hidden in the engine compartment of a 1980 Ford F-150 pickup truck that was being driven by a 30-year-old U.S. citizen traveling from Mexico.

“Preventing the entry of harmful agricultural products is an integral aspect of America’s Frontline,” said Randy Lowe, Director of Field Operations for the Laredo office.

An officer assigned to the bridge flagged the vehicle for secondary inspection, and when the driver was unable to open the hood, it was sent in for a further look.

An agriculture canine and non-intrusive imaging system examination led to the discovery of more than 200 pounds of "undeclared and prohibited pork products concealed in the engine compartment."

According to a press release from CBP, agriculture specialists issued a $1,000 civil penalty for the undeclared commercial quantity of the prohibited product.

"At this time, Mexico is considered free of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) but pork importations need to meet special requirements," CBP said in the release. "Attempting to bring in prohibited agricultural items could lead to traveler delays and may result in a fine ranging from $300 to $1,000."
