Korea-based restaurant chain BB.Q Chicken is opening its first Austin location this month. The 6929 Airport Boulevard, Suite 158 restaurant in the Highland neighborhood is opening today, Monday, August 17. The new restaurant will operate with only takeout, curbside pickup, and catering services, with third-party deliveries to come later.
Despite the name, the restaurants are known for its Korean fried chicken. (BB.Q stands for “best of the best quality,” not Korean barbecue,) The chicken, which is fried in fresh oil and cornstarch, can come in an array of flavors, including the original; the Gangnam-style chicken (with peppers and leeks sauteed in a black pepper sauce); the Wings of Fire, a basket of very spicy chicken wings tossed in a very spicy sauce; the honey-garlic; the soy-garlic; and even the Cheesling (where the chicken is cooked in a mascarpone and cheddar cheese mixture). There are bone-in and boneless choices, as well as several fry options, tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), calamari, takoyaki, and rice.
For drinks, there’s a full bar, beer, and soda, though it’s not clear if the restaurant is offering alcoholic drinks to-go.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant isn’t opening with any sort of dine-in service at this point. It is also offering contactless payments. Its employees will wear face masks, gloves, and face shields, and they will undergo wellness and temperature checks at the beginning of every shift. The space features hand sanitizer stations and high-touch areas will be cleaned often.
Originally, this BB.Q Chicken Highland Village restaurant was supposed to open on Monday, August 10, but it had to delay its debut because of last-minute construction.
BB.Q Chicken is taking overs over the phone at (512) 344-9014. Its daily hours are from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The restaurant is offering 10 percent off all orders through Monday, August 31.
BB.Q’s parent company Genesis BBQ Group started in 1995 in Korea. It grew quickly across the world and expanded into America in 2006. There are locations in Plano, Katy, and the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area, with another coming to Houston too.
The restaurant is found in the same shopping plaza as 99 Ranch Market, Kura Revolving Sushi Bar, Sazan Ramen, 85 Degrees Bakery Cafe, Steamies, and 101 by Tea Haus.
