Kentucky Fried Chicken isn’t “Finger Lickin Good,” anymore and it has nothing to do with the recipe.
In a sign of the times, the restaurant chain is doing away with its famous slogan, deeming it “inappropriate” to encourage any sort of ‘finger lickin’ during the coronavirus pandemic when putting your hands to your mouth isn’t the best idea.
No joke.
In fact, KFC apparently hasn’t used the slogan since this all started to snowball back in March noting in a press release that it would be “inappropriate” in light of the coronavirus pandemic and as it pushes forward with strict hand-washing practices for its workers, Yahoo Life reported.
“We find ourselves in a unique situation — having an iconic slogan that doesn’t quite fit in the current environment,” Catherine Tan-Gillespie, KFC’s global chief marketing officer said in the statement, according to Yahoo Life. “While we are pausing the use of ‘It’s Finger Lickin’ Good,’ rest assured the food craved by so many people around the world isn’t changing one bit.”
And, according to the report, this comes “a few months” after Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority received more than 100 complaints after a KFC commercial aired there showing diners “enthusiastically sucking their fingers post-drumstick.”
And while this may seem a little silly — look, the coronavirus is very real and you should be very safe and not go all hands-to-face in public, but the chicken giant’s slogan probably isn’t going to make or break us in this fight — KFC did have a bit of fun with it.
Per Yahoo Life, a new ad campaign shows the “Finger Lickin” blurred on the side of the bucket, and in a video posted to YouTube in the U.K. and Ireland they say “That thing was always say? Ignore it. For now.”
In another statement to Yahoo Life, a KFC spokesperson said “that slog feels like it’s in our DNA, but this is the right thing to do. It’s been a tough year and we’ll miss those beloved two words, but this is just a pause, a hiatus, a sabbatical, whatever you want to call it.”
