Welcome back to AM Intel, a round-up of mini news bites to kick off the day.
It’s Fried Chicken Time
Here’s the thing: If you haven’t already placed an order for this weekend’s Super Cluckin’ Sunday at Cutty’s, you’re already too late (although you can email cuttyfoods@gmail.com to be added to the waitlist; include your name, phone number, and how many sandwiches you would want to order). But the popular fried chicken sandwich monthly special is back after a pandemic-induced hiatus, and the schedule is now out through the end of the year, so you can put those ordering deadlines on your calendar.
The Brookline sandwich shop is running Super Cluckin’ Sunday a bit differently during COVID, with pre-ordering required — it’s open from Monday morning through Tuesday evening of the week leading up to the event. Orders are spaced out among various time slots to allow for social distancing. And the good news: It’s happening twice a month instead of once a month, with the dates alternating between the barbecue ranch version and the “OG” honey mustard version of the sandwich.
The even better news: “If all goes well, we will offer Cutty’s fried chicken sandwiches a lot more!”
Missing out this weekend? Here are a variety of other excellent local fried chicken options available for takeout and delivery.
Bagels and Doughnuts, Together at Last
Two local mini-chains are teaming up to bring doughnuts to bagel lovers — a rotating selection of Union Square Donuts doughnuts will now be available at the Bagel Table shops, starting with the Brighton location on October 9 (86 Guest St., Boston Landing) and eventually expanding to the Bagel Table’s Chestnut Hill and Ashland locations.
Core flavors like maple bacon, Vietnamese coffee, and Boston cream might make appearances, as well as seasonal specials like caramel apple crisp.
In Other News...
- South End wine shop the Urban Grape will be hosting local restaurants on Tuesday nights, starting October 13, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. — the restaurant will offer an easily reheatable dish, portioned for two, and the Urban Grape’s TJ Douglas will offer a wine pairing for it. Stay tuned for details on dishes and restaurants; the lineup will include spots like Fox & the Knife, Mei Mei, Oleana, Row 34, and more.
- In other pop-up news, Chickadee chef de cuisine Stef Bui is appearing at Black Lamb on October 11 with her new pop-up Bún Bò Bui, serving Vietnamese beef noodle soup bún bò hue and more.
- The fate of Boston’s very old Amrheins restaurant has been up in the air since early 2019, when the property came under agreement for an $18 million sale. At the time, it was reported that the restaurant would stay open for at least another year and a half with a possibility to extend the lease or maybe find a new location. Newly announced plans for the site involve new construction that would allow for Amrheins to live on, albeit as a smaller cafe and bar with some outdoor seating.
- More than two dozen workers at a Vermont apple orchard have tested positive for coronavirus, contributing to the state’s largest daily rise in cases since early June. Most are reportedly asymptomatic, although one has been hospitalized.
