KALAMAZOO, MI-- If you are looking for a taste of Chicago without the drive, Ray Ray’s Italian Beef and Sausage can provide.

When you walk in the door of the Kalamazoo eatery, you are greeted by memorabilia from Chicago’s sports teams like the Bulls, Blackhawks, Cubs and White Sox.

With a customer-first approach, owner Luis Aljona has been setting higher standards for not only his food, but for the small team of employees at Ray Ray’s over the last year since he took full ownership of the restaurant.

The bread and meat at Ray Ray’s come from, you guessed it, Chicago — giving the food a more authentic taste. The baby back ribs, rib tips and chicken are all barbecued on-site, with the ribs smoking for eight to twelve hours.

Address: 1715 Miller Road, Kalamazoo

Type of food: Sandwiches, hot dogs and ribs

About the restaurant: Founded in 2010, Luis Aljona has owned the shop for about one year.

Patrons' favorite dish: Italian beef ($8.50-$11) or baby back ribs (half slab with two sides is $13, full slab with two sides is $20)

Dining options: Takeout or delivery is available through DoorDash or Grubhub. Currently no dine-in, due to COVID-19.

Prices: Menu items range from $4-15

Hours of operation: Open Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m - 6 p.m. Closed on Sunday and Monday.

Those looking for a little adventure could try the Ray Ray’s challenge: Randy’s jumbo 26-inch sandwich with Italian meatball “sweetness” and beef and sausage combo, plus one pound of fries.

The colossal meal costs $50, plus tax. But if you can finish it all within an hour, the victorious diner receives a free T-shirt, gets their photo on the wall and their meal is on the house. One more added perk to Ray Ray’s challenge — winners also get to rename the sandwich.
