According to reporting from Radio Taiwan International, Premier Su Tseng-chang has said that Taiwan should prioritise market access with its trade partners as trade negotiations with the United States continue. He fears that additional labelling would be viewed as a trade barrier.
Taiwan will greenlight imports of US pork containing the additive ractopamine from 1 January 2021. Su said that all 11 members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) allow pork with the additive, including South Korea and Japan. Su stressed that Taiwan cannot afford to erect market barriers.
He did announce a plan for government inspections of imported pork to ensure that ractopamine levels were within global standards.
