Who couldn’t use an extra dose of luck in 2021?

If ever there was a year to indulge in central Pennsylvania’s New Year’s Day tradition of eating pork and sauerkraut for good luck, this is the year.

Almost every area has a variation on the belief that the first food you eat at the turn of the year can influence what kind of year you’ll have. Around the world, different cultures indulge in traditional New Year’s foods.

Pennsylvania Dutch lore dictates eating the fermented cabbage and pork will bring good fortune in the new year.

The pig roots forward so if your first meal includes pork, you’ll move ahead all year, according to Pennsylvania German folklore. The swelling of the sauerkraut symbolizes bounty.

This year, a handful of restaurants and fire companies are selling the meals, and following Gov. Tom Wolf’s orders are selling takeout or drive-through pickup.

Of course, you can prepare your own pork and sauerkraut at home. But if you’d rather buy a meal, here are some places in the Harrisburg region to go:

City Line Diner

The diner in Paxtang is open 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will serve pork and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes and soup of the day for $12.95.

Owner Matt Flinchbaugh has streamlined Flinchy’s traditional New Year’s Day celebration.

This year, the neighborhood restaurant will open at noon with pork and sauerkraut dinners available for takeout or the option to be ordered on Flinchy’s heated, enclosed deck.

Flinchbaugh said the dinners replace the restaurant’s traditional buffet, something they are unable to do this year due to the pandemic. The dinners cost $10 a piece. The restaurant is also selling hot dogs with sides for $5 or two hot dogs with sides for $7.

Also, this year Flinchbaugh said due to tough economic times, the restaurant will not be donating proceeds from the meals to the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area as it has done in the past.
