Neither had Draymond Green, so that made it even stranger that the Pistons’ reserve aggressively approached the Warriors’ bench after Golden State walloped Detroit 118-91 on Saturday night at Chase Center.
“When the f--- did Rodney McGruder become the tough guy on the team?” Green said. “I don’t know, man. Everybody in the league is tough these days. It’s crazy.
“I’ve seen a lot of tough guys this year. I don’t understand it, and don’t nobody do anything.”
McGruder, who played the final six minutes, 24 seconds of the blowout, walked toward the Warriors’ bench after the buzzer. He went straight for Juan Toscano-Anderson, apparently questioning a comment the Warriors’ two-way player directed toward Wayne Ellington during the first half.
The fire was quickly extinguished as no Pistons player backed McGruder, and instead walked toward their own locker room.
“Get the hell out of here,” Green said. “F---ing tough guy, Rodney. Rodney, f---ing tough guy. Also, I’m rocking with Juan T. Juan T was about to bring that ‘Town Bizness.’”
Undrafted out of Kansas State in 2013, McGruder played 112 games for Miami from 2016 to ’19. He played 56 games for the Clippers last season, including four starts.
He’s averaged 5.8 points and 3.1 rebounds during his career.
McGruder totaled 13 minutes, 36 seconds of playing time in 19 games with Detroit this season before logging mop-up duty Saturday.
“This dude might be out of the league soon,” Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson said. “He might be mad about that.”
