That’s what an investigation by Andrew Wasley and Alexandra Heal of media outlet The Guardian appears to reveal. The Guardian alleges that along with Walmart and Costco, Cincinnati-based Kroger has been selling Brazilian beef from a company that has been linked to deforestation of the Amazon rainforest.
JBS, which is considered to be the world’s largest meat company, imported “thousands of tonnes” of Brazilian beef for U.S. groceries through its subsidiary Sampco, the Guardian says. Corned beef went to Kroger for sale.
The Guardian reports a Kroger representative as saying “We take deforestation seriously, as demonstrated by our no-deforestation commitment, and continue to engage our suppliers in pursuit of this commitment and to ensure no deforestation is happening in our relevant supply chains.”
"JBS beef exports have been linked to farms involved in up to 115 sq miles (300 sq km) of deforestation a year. The company slaughters almost 35,000 cattle a day in Brazil," the Guardian reports.
A JBS spokesperson denies the Guardian's findings.
The Guardian’s reporting on the issue is based on research by the news outlet, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and the nonprofit data analysis agency C4ADS.
