In their recent appearances in beef, dairy and swine shows, Dawson County students really brought home the bacon.
Students from the Dawson County High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) club and Dawson County 4-H took home several titles in various competitions in the Hall County FFA beef and dairy show on Saturday, Jan. 30, according to FFA Advisor and Agricultural Sciences Teacher Keith Pankey.
“Both had multiple Top 3 placings with beef, and dairy did very well,” Pankey said. “The kids have worked hard all season with their livestock projects.”
From the Dawson County FFA, Chase Cofield won Grand Champion dairy heifer, Kacy Kimbrall won Reserve Champion dairy heifer and Cort Shelnutt won third best overall dairy heifer.
Cort Shelnutt also claimed champion senior showmanship dairy, and Emily Cox from Dawson County High School’s 4-H club won junior champion showmanship dairy.
At the Feb. 7 weekend’s North Georgia Swine Spectacular in Gilmer, Dawson County FFA and 4-H also brought home some hardware. Students competed in swine showmanship and market hog classes and had several Top 3 to Top 6 placings, according to Pankey.
Freddie Jenkins from Dawson County won reserve grand champion market barrow with his market barrow, “Tank.” Jenkins also won fifth best overall showman.
Dawson County FFA students placed between first and fifth with their beef projects in the Lumpkin County Heifers in the Hills competition the same weekend.
“The kids did a great job and have worked hard with their market hog projects,” Pankey said. “And great job from all this weekend with their livestock projects.”
