ALBANY, N.Y. — Nine Pin Ciderworks, New York’s first farm cidery, is collaborating with the Sollohub Family Farm in Averill Park, by feeding their ethically raised pigs a special diet of apple pomace from the cidery. The diet imparts a uniquely sweet flavor to the finished meat.
The cidery joins the Sollohub Family Farm is offering a “Closing the Loop” CSA styled share that includes a 15-pound variety pack portion of the pork, together with one four-pack each of Nine Pin Signature and Ginger ciders. The share may be ordered on ninepincider.com.
The Sollohub Family Farm is committed to providing the community with fresh and wholesome food. The availability of natural forages like acorns, along with the freedom to explore and exercise results in a darker, better marbled, and more flavorful pork than what you would expect from a conventionally raised pig or supermarket pack of pork chops.
The family farm is confident that you can taste a subtle sweetness and taste of apples in their meat that you will be sure to love.
“We are super excited about the opportunity to collaborate with Nine Pin on this special pork share,” owner Mark Sollohub said in a recent news release.
“We love Nine Pin Cider and the awesome folks who create it, so the idea of taking a byproduct from cider pressing and using it to add value to our pork products seemed like a perfect opportunity," Sollohub explained.
“We can’t wait to taste the difference our apple pomace will deliver to the pork," Alejandro del Peral, co-owner and cidermaker remarked.
“We always look for new and interesting ways to make use of our apples to keep our customers’ taste buds intrigued. Our collaboration with Sollohub is sure to do that for all of our meat-eating fans," del Peral added.
Interested buyers need to put their order in by Wednesday, Feb. 10. The pork/cider share will be ready for pick up on Wednesday, Feb. 24.
