The World Pork Expo, which typically attracts thousands of visitors to Des Moines, will be held in June at the Iowa State Fairgrounds after organizers canceled the event two years in a row.
Both of the cancellations by the National Pork Producers Council were for health reasons: in 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2019, to protect against the possible introduction of African Swine Fever into the U.S. The disease is fatal to pigs and has wiped out herds in China and other countries.
This year's three-day expo will be held from June 9-11.
The pork council said it would continue to monitor local, state and federal COVID-19 guidelines to ensure the safety of participants. The council said it will provide guidance on the required safety precautions.
“A safe event is our number one priority,” said Jen Sorenson, the pork council's board president and spokeswoman for Iowa Select, the largest pork producer in Iowa and the eighth-largest nationally.
“We will implement appropriate precautionary measures to ensure a great experience for all World Pork Expo participants,” Sorenson said in a statement.
The event historically attracts about 20,000 people who travel from around the country and world to Iowa, the nation's top pork producer, to network and learn about new industry innovations, organizers say. About 500 companies exhibit equipment and other products at the expo.
