With a majority of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many people were looking forward to indulging in some traditional Irish fare.
But that might prove to be more difficult than usual now that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a recall on nearly 300,000 pounds of canned corned beef.
On Friday, the FSIS announced that a total of 297,715 pounds of the ready-to-eat canned meat was recalled by Milky Way International Trading Corp., doing business as MW Polar, for failing to go through a re-inspection upon import.
"The problem was discovered after FSIS received a tip from an industry representative indicating that corned beef product received from Milky Way did not undergo FSIS import reinspection," the recall announcement noted.
The products, with the label “Ox & Palm” on the can, were imported between June 6, 2020 and January 21, 2021.
They all read “Australia Inspected” and featured the number “39.” Pictures of the cans in question can be seen here. A fully detailed chart with the affected codes and products can be found here.
They were shipped to retail locations nationwide.
Consumers who find the recalled product in their pantry are urged not to consume them. The products should either be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
The FSIS said there were no reports of any adverse reactions linked to the recall. If anyone has negative reactions, they should call their healthcare provider immediately.
