Michiganers will soon be able to get their Chicago Italian Beef fix when Portillo’s opens its first Michigan restaurant on March 16 on Hall Road in Sterling Heights. And MLive has learned this restaurant is just the beginning.

We talked to Mr. Portillo, himself, who revealed there are plans to expand all over Michigan with up to a half-dozen more restaurants. So, why did it take so long to bring Portillo’s to Michigan in the first place?

“We spent a long time kind of building out existing markets, but then, when we enter a market, the goal is to grow in that market,” Michael Portillo told MLive. “We knew we wanted to hit the Michigan market, so we had been looking for some time now. It’s first about finding the right location as well as that strategic plan of where we place them.”

Portillo’s is known for its Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches, Chicago-style hot dogs, char-grilled burgers, cheese fries, salads, Italian sausages and chocolate cake. Portillo says now that his family’s restaurant is finally opening a Michigan location, the plan is to expand.

“We absolutely have plans for more in Michigan. We’re going to build out Michigan. It’s very strategic. Sterling Heights is our anchor. Where we go from here, there’s a plan behind it. We are currently finding the right property locations and working the right deals. And we do have deals in the works. You’ll be hearing more soon.”

So exactly where and when have not been revealed yet because the deals have not been finalized, but you can be sure MLive will let you know exactly where future Portillo’s will open up as soon as we find out.
