NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - North Platte’s economy is in the process of expanding. A new meat processing plant could break ground as early as this fall, creating nearly 900 jobs.
Sustainable Beef, LLC made the announcement Thursday afternoon.
The plan is to build the 300,000 square foot plant on an empty lagoon near Newberry and Golden Road. The plant is expected to employ 875 people with an average salary of around $50,000 annually. The plant anticipates to draw employees who live within a 60-mile radius.
David Briggs, Sustainable Beef, LLC CEO said the plant will process around 400,000 cattle each year.
“We are also going to make this plant big enough to handle cows, the big four do not handle cows our plant will be able to handle cows,” Briggs said. “We think this area needs another place to handle cows, plus it will allow us to make sure we have the ability to keep the plant at capacity year-round so that’s another plus.”
The cost of the project is estimated between $280-300 million dollars. Tax increment financing will be used for the construction of the plant.
Sustainable Beef, LLC is working through the municipal process and hopes to break ground this fall and begin plant operations in early 2023.
