One of your political cartoons on Sunday, March 14, referred to the recently-passed COVID Relief Bill as “pork.” I think it’s anything but that.
Tell those families that have had to depend on the food banks for enough to eat that the $1400 per person they will receive is “pork.”
Tell the laid-off workers that the extended unemployment insurance they will receive is “pork.” And contrary to popular opinion, studies have shown that the vast majority of people on extended unemployment relief still work hard to find new jobs.
Tell the mayors of upstate cities and towns, whose citizens have been unable to pay their taxes because they lost their jobs, that the help their towns will receive in this bill is “pork.”
Tell the children helped out of poverty by this bill that it is “pork.” Today, one child in six in the United States, nearly 12 million children, lives in poverty. Provisions of this bill will cut child poverty in the United States in half, according to Columbia University.
My wife and I have been blessed in that we have enough resources for our own needs. Each month, we have been donating to food banks and others to help those harmed by the pandemic and the recession.
Thank you Joe Biden and the Democrats in Congress for this needed bill.
Shame on those who would call it “pork”, and great shame on Congressman Scott Perry for voting against it.
