OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The Omaha Beef football teamed up with Open Door Mission for its Sock it to ‘Em promotion Saturday night.

The two are tackling a common problem the homeless face, as the Beef start their 22nd season.

The pandemic sidelined the team last season. On Saturday, the Beef asked fans for help.

“Without giving back to the community the Beef wouldn’t be here for as long as we have,” Omaha Beef’s Jeff Sprowls said.

The Beef partnered with Open Door Mission to collect sock donations as fans returned to Ralston Arena for the first time since the pandemic.

“By having new socks to give to our guests, it’s really a blessing that most of us take for granted,” Open Door Mission’s Deb Saraka said.

Not only do they need volunteers to help with their community’s events, but socks are one of the items always in demand at the Mission.

“When you’re homeless, you’re not thinking about changing [socks] because you don’t really have the means to do that,” Saraka said.

Fans could bring their prepackaged tube socks to Saturday’s game.

Open Door Mission hopes to see the same kind of support fans brought at the first game of the season.

“Anything else we can do in the future, we’re willing to reach out to them,” Sprowls said.

Open Door Mission says it’s looking for more volunteers as it opens its campus to more volunteers.
