Canadian smoked meat and pork roll poutine are coming to the Jersey Shore - NJ.com

New Jersey has scores of amazing delis — as NJ.com has faithfully reminded you — but how many places in the Garden State are serving Montréal smoked meat sandwiches?

Berg’s Smoked Meat & Poutine, a ghost kitchen serving up sandwiches from the Great White North, is coming to Asbury Park this summer with a glutenous menu of meats and French Canadian fries. Berg’s aims to start slinging its sandwich on June 4.

Owner Kevin Newberg has been to Montreal several times in the past decade, and every trip has included a stop at Schwartz’s Deli, a cultural institution some call the Canadian Katz’s Deli, for a smoked meat sandwich. He loved the sandwich so much he wanted to bring

“Every time I went there I’d get it,” Newberg said. “I was just like, ‘why does nobody sell this?’”

Berg’s main dish is the Montréal smoked meat sandwich, which the company describes as “pastrami’s better-tasting cousin.” Much like pastrami, it’s a time- and labor-intensive process that leads to a delicious, decadent sandwich.

“We take a prime beef brisket, dry-cure it with 12 different spices for 14 days, smoke over oak wood for eight hours, steamed for three hours and finally hand-slice to order,” according to Berg’s website. “Smoky, fatty, luscious, tender, everything you hoped and dreamed for.”

Berg’s has several sandwiches on its menu, including a classic smoked meat sandwich with mustard on rye bread, a Reuben with smoked meat, a smoked turkey sandwich with turkey from Hinck’s Turkey Farm in Manasquan, a Thanksgiving sandwich with cranberry aioli and a potato latke, and a Black Russian sandwich with smoked meat, turkey breast, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing and coleslaw on pumpernickel.

Berg also serves poutine, Canada’s national dish, consisting of french fries topped with gravy and cheese curds.

“I’m getting from the cheese curds from this farm in upstate New York, they’re shipping them once a week,” Newberg said. “The curds are literally going to be from the cow to your plate in a three-day period, that’s how fresh they’re gonna be.”

While New Jersey takes disco fries pretty seriously and poutine is served around the country, it certainly isn’t as popular here as it is in Canada. Berg’s serves several takes on the dish, including one with pork roll. Potato latkes, matzo ball soup and dill pickles are on the menu as well.

Berg’s is operating out of the Asbury Park Food Collective. Delivery will be available as well.
