Epicurious announces it will no longer share beef recipes, but that's not necessarily a nutritional good - AG Week

But cutting out beef isn't a decision that makes sense nutritionally, said Julie Garden-Robinson, professor and food and nutrition specialist at North Dakota State University.

"Beef is an excellent source of many nutrients, including zinc, iron and protein. We sometimes call that the 'zip factor' in nutrition, because these nutrients help build and maintain lean muscles, maintain the health of our blood and help regulate several body processes. Beef also provides minerals such as selenium, phosphorus and magnesium, along with several B vitamins. In particular, only animal products contain vitamin B-12," she said. "Therefore, completely excluding all animal-based products from your diet could result in a type of anemia, fatigue and long-term issues."

Epicurious has made a name for itself by sharing eye-catching recipes. From hearty to healthy, the company prides itself on sharing vibrant and delicious recipes that professional chefs and home cooks alike can enjoy. And up until a year ago, many of those recipes included beef.

According to Maggie Hoffman, senior editor for Epicurious, and David Tamarkin, former digital director for Epicurious, the company began diminishing its use of beef in recipes in 2019 and made the decision to quietly say goodbye to beef altogether a year ago.

"Our hope is that the more sustainable we make our coverage, the more sustainable American cooking will become,” the editors wrote in the announcement.

Over the past several years, the cattle industry has been under attack by climate allegations, especially by those who live in the spotlight, such as Ellen DeGeneres and Leonardo DiCaprio. The 2020 Global Globes even featured an all-vegan meal to "send a signal" about climate change.

While these Hollywood A-listers may be making an anti-beef statement and stance, just by looking at Epicurious' comment section on their Instagram post, the average American consumer is still very much pro-beef. With comments such as, "unfollowed, " to "very disappointed," to "This is ignorant" filling the comment section.

Many commenters were calling for the company to educate itself and followers about the subject, one being Angie Mar, a professional chef that works in New York City. Mar commented on the post, "This is one of the most short sighted, idiotic things I've ever seen. Not using your platform to educate people on sustainable farming versus industrial farming, the impact we have on small, local, farming communities, and the CHEFS that support them and the ecosystem that those small farms are a part of... The disservice to consumers who are looking to you for guidance- this isn't even proper journalism. Jokers."

It's clear to see that for many, beef is still what's for dinner.
