A local beef plant intends to hire 19 more people and has received some funding from the state to help that happen.

USA Beef Packing LLC was approved Friday for up to $134,099 by the Job Training Incentive Program Board.

The state-funded JTIP program is part of the New Mexico Economic Development Department. JTIP helps pay part of the wages when new or expanding companies in the state hire people or promote people into new positions.

USA Beef Packing, which has been operating in Chaves County since fall 2017, has indicated that it wants to hire people for five positions with starting wages ranging from $12 an hour to $19.23 an hour. Wages for experienced workers would range from $14 an hour to $40 an hour. The highest pay is for the plant manager position.

In addition to a plant manager, the company is also planning to employ two deboners, 11 meat processors and packagers, two quality assurance specialists and three maintenance personnel.

“The company is seeing a growth in their business and they need to hire and train new employees,” said Mike Espiritu, president of the Roswell-Chaves County Economic Development Corp., which assists local industrial companies seeking JTIP funding. “We are pleased to see them grow and hire more employees in the area.”

The company previously received JTIP funding in February 2020 for up to $232,321 to hire and train 38 people. According to documents provided by the state, the company was able to recruit 23 employees from that round of funding, with the employees still with the company.

USA Beef Packing is owned by Joe Madrid and his family. It has a slaughterhouse and meat processing and packaging plant on Cedarvale Road and another processing and packaging site in the 1600 block of South Main Street.

The company slaughters and processes primarily beef but also works with bison.
