Welcome back to AM Intel, a round-up of mini news bites to kick off the day.

Somerville Fried Chicken News

Spring Hill neighborhood favorite Highland Kitchen is taking a little vacation and transforming into Highland Chicken for the rest of the summer, temporarily serving a menu that focuses on fried and grilled chicken sandwiches, tenders, and wings, with some sides, salads, and boozy (or non-boozy) milkshakes. Takeout and delivery are currently available, with outdoor dining appearing in the next week or so. Highland Chicken is operating from 4 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, and those who don’t want to plan ahead can walk up and order.

It’s not necessarily a surprising pivot for the restaurant: Highland Kitchen has long been celebrated for its fried chicken and tiki-themed Monday nights, and at the end of 2017, the team transformed the former East Coast Grill space in Cambridge into Highland Fried, for those who want fried chicken and tiki drinks every night. (Who doesn’t?)

Highland Chicken is up and running as of today, August 20.

In other Somerville fried chicken news, Union Square oasis Field & Vine, which serves locally sourced food in a space that looks like an intimate woodland hideaway, is opening up on Monday nights starting on August 24, featuring fried Feather Brook Farms chicken, oysters from Island Creek, and cocktails by Sam Treadway of neighboring cocktail gem Backbar. The restaurant is currently offering patio service and has temporarily suspended its curbside pickup. Reservations available via Resy.

  • West Springfield institution White Hut, a casual 81-year-old spot known for its cheeseburgers, celebrates its grand reopening on August 21 under new ownership and after some renovations; it had closed abruptly in February, a closure deemed “permanent” at the time. New owners Andy Yee and Peter Picknelly have brought back some veteran staffers and are using the original White Hut recipes.
  • East Somerville will celebrate “Meal of Fortune” week from September 28 through October 4. Purchase a $25, $50, or $100 meal ticket ($25 will feed one to two people, depending on the restaurant); fill out a flavor profile quiz; select a date, time, and dine-in, takeout, or delivery; and wait until the week prior to the event to find out at which participating East Somerville restaurant you’ll be eating.
  • The team behind Nightshade Noodle Bar in downtown Lynn is getting into the retail business, opening a supermarket, Sin City Superette, next door this fall. Expect grocery staples, household essentials, prepared foods, coffee with “good gas station creamers,” and “whatever else we can cram in to make our neighborhood (and beyond) more comfortable through the winter version of the pandemic ahead.” Grocery delivery will be available (no fee for elderly and disabled customers). Sin City Superette will be open daily — and “yes we will have a hot dog roller.”
