USDA – record July highs for red meat, pork production
Commercial red meat production was a record monthly high in July, led by a big surge in pork production. The USDA says commercial red meat production totaled 4.811 billion pounds, up 5% from July 2019, with pork at 2.372 billion pounds, an increase of 7%, with a 6% rise in the slaughter to 11.225 million and a three pound gain in the average live weight at 283 pounds.
Commercial beef production was 2.421 billion pounds, 3% higher than the year before, with a 1% decline in slaughter to 2.918 million head canceled out by a 37 pound jump in the average live weight at 1,363 pounds.
The dairy cow slaughter for July was 233,700 head, up 6,700 from June, but down 23,100 from July 2019 as producers slowdown the pace of herd liquidation. For the year to date, the dairy cow slaughter is 1.826 million head, 68,000 slower than the year ago pace.
For the year to date, commercial red meat production is 31.635 billion pounds, 1% ahead of 2019’s record pace.

Michigan: Total: 106.4 million pounds, up 20% from July 2019
Minnesota: Total: 250.3 million pounds, up 10% from July 2019
Missouri: Total: 156.3 million pounds, down 2% from July 2019
Nebraska: Total: 712.2 million pounds, up 5% from July 2019
Ohio: Total: 25 million pounds, up 20% from July 2019
South Dakota: Total: 139.9 million pounds, up 12% from July 2019
Tennessee: Total: 25.1 million pounds, up 13% from July 2019
Wisconsin: Total: 110.4 million pounds, up 7% from July 2019
