There’s nothing quite like a nice piece of golden-brown, hot out the grease, fried chicken.
Sure, it’ll clog your arteries, but man there are few things better.
So, who does fried chicken best?
Redbook recently asked and answered the question in a piece posted to Yahoo.com
It ranked 12 fast-food fried chicken offerings and an icon — although, not truly real friend chicken — brought up the rear.
McDonald came in 12th with the piece noting its Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich and new Chicken Selects while knocking the golden arches and saying “let’s get on to the real competition.”
The 11th-ranked spot might surprise folks because Colonel Sanders and KFC slotted in there. Bojangles was 10th, Church’s was ninth, Wingstop eighth, Raising Cane’s chicken fingers got it the seventh spot, Shake Shake was sixth, Zaxby’s fifth, Jolibee fourth and Hattie B’s Hot Chicken was third.
An absolute juggernaut — Chick-fil-A — came in second.
But, again, those nuggets, sandwiches and strips just aren’t the same as a real piece of fried chicken.
And the top-ranked joint by Redbook gives that an effort. And, considering the chicken sandwich wars that popped up last year, Chick-fil-A probably won’t appreciate Popeyes getting the top spot.
But, as the report notes, Popeyes “has mastered the traditional T.L.C. method of hand-battered, deep-fried chicken at scale without sacrificing quality.”
Redbook noted the consistency and crunchiness of many of Popeyes' offerings and also praised its sides and atmosphere, saying that eating a Popeyes still had the feel of eating at a mom-and-pop joint.
So, the next time you head out for some fried chicken, Popeyes might be the spot if you want the authentic taste from a fast-food spot. Not a Popeyes fan? Let us know where you believe the best fast-food fried chicken in Pennsylvania can be found.
