USDA’s Northeast Cash Receipts Summary finds that 2020 national production of cattle and hogs totaled 86 billion pounds, down 1% from 2019. Production increased 2% for cattle but decreased 3% for hogs.
Total 2020 cash receipts from marketings of meat animals decreased 7% to $82.3 billion. Cattle accounted for 77% of this total, and hogs accounted for 23%.
The 2020 gross income from cattle and hogs for the United States totaled $82.7 billion, down 7% from 2019. Gross income decreased 5% for cattle and 12% for hogs from the previous year.
Delaware
Total 2020 cash receipts from marketings of meat animals increased 8% to $11.9 million. Cattle accounted for 55% of this total, and hogs accounted for 45%.
Cash receipts from marketings of cattle increased 19% from $5.48 million in 2019 to $6.5 million in 2020. All cattle and calf marketings totaled 6.4 million pounds in 2020, up 24% from 2019.
Cash receipts from hogs totaled $5.42 million during 2020, down 3% from 2019. Marketings totaled 11.2 million pounds in 2020, up 2% from 2019 marketings.
The 2020 gross income from cattle totaled $6.8 million, up 19% from 2019. Gross income for hogs totaled $5.44 million, 3% below the previous year.
Total 2020 production of cattle totaled 4.78 million pounds, up 7% from 2019. Production increased 1% for hogs to 11.2 million pounds.
Maryland
Total 2020 cash receipts from marketings of meat animals decreased 29% to $70.3 million. Cattle accounted for 91% of this total, and hogs accounted for 9%.
Cash receipts from marketings of cattle decreased 32% from $93.5 million in 2019 to $64 million in 2020. All cattle and calf marketings totaled 63.3 million pounds in 2020, down 29% from 2019.
Cash receipts from hogs totaled $6.34 million during 2020, up 14% from 2019. Marketings totaled 13.1 million pounds in 2020, up 20% from 2019.
The 2020 gross income from cattle totaled $66.4 million, down 31% from 2019. Gross income for hogs totaled $6.44 million, 15% above the previous year.
Total 2020 production of cattle totaled 58.6 million pounds, down 20% from 2019. Production increased 19% for hogs to 12.2 million pounds.
New England
Total 2020 cash receipts from marketings of meat animals decreased 5% to $115 million. Cattle accounted for 96% of this total, and hogs accounted for 4%.
Cash receipts from marketings of cattle decreased 4% to $110 million in 2020. All cattle and calf marketings totaled 103 million pounds in 2020, down 2% from 2019.
Cash receipts from hogs totaled $4.89 million during 2020, down 10% from 2019. Marketings totaled 10.1 million pounds in 2020, down 5% from 2019.
The 2020 gross income from cattle and hogs for New England totaled $124 million, down 4% from 2019. Gross income for cattle decreased 4%, and hogs decreased 8% from the previous year.
Total 2020 production of cattle and hogs for New England totaled 105 million pounds, down 4% from 2019. Production decreased 4% for cattle, and decreased 7% for hogs.
New Jersey
Total 2020 cash receipts from marketings of meat animals increased 12% to $10.9 million. Cattle and calves accounted for 95% of this total, and hogs accounted for 5%.
Cash receipts from marketings of cattle increased 13% from $9.1 million in 2019 to $10.3 million in 2020. All cattle and calf marketings totaled 9.87 million pounds in 2020, up 18% from 2019.
Cash receipts from hogs totaled $563,000 during 2020, down $46,000 from 2019. Marketings totaled 1.16 million pounds in 2020, down 3% from 2019.
The 2020 gross income from cattle and hogs for New Jersey totaled $12 million, up 4% from 2019. Gross income for cattle increased 6%, but hogs decreased 19% from the previous year.
Total 2020 production of cattle and hogs for New Jersey totaled 7.12 million pounds, down 14% from 2019. Production decreased 15% for cattle and 9% for hogs.
New York
Total 2020 cash receipts from marketings of meat animals increased 9% to $297 million. Cattle accounted for 98% of this total, and hogs accounted for 2%.
Cash receipts from marketings of cattle increased 9%, from $266 million in 2019 to $291 million in 2020. All cattle and calf marketings totaled 288 million pounds in 2020, up 15% from 2019.
Cash receipts from hogs totaled $6.1 million during 2020, up 13% from 2019. Marketings totaled 12.6 million pounds in 2020, up 19% from 2019.
The 2020 gross income from cattle and hogs for New York totaled $310 million, up 9% from 2019. Gross income for cattle increased 9% and for hogs 16% from the previous year.
Total 2020 production of cattle and hogs for New York totaled 267 million pounds, up 5% from 2019. Production increased 4% for cattle and 63% for hogs.
Pennsylvania
Total 2020 cash receipts from marketings of meat animals decreased 7% to $886 million. Cattle accounted for 66% of this total, and hogs accounted for 34%.
Cash receipts from marketings of cattle decreased 6% from $621 million in 2019 to $586 million in 2020. All cattle and calf marketings totaled 569 million pounds in 2020, down 2% from 2019.
Cash receipts from hogs totaled $299 million during 2020, down 9% from 2019. Marketings totaled 617 million pounds in 2020, down 4% from 2019.
The 2020 gross income from cattle and hogs for Pennsylvania totaled $902 million, down 7% from 2019. Gross income decreased 6% for cattle and 9% for hogs from the previous year.
Total 2020 production of cattle and hogs for Pennsylvania totaled 1.09 billion pounds, down 5% from 2019. Production decreased 7% for cattle and 4% for hogs.
Annual ARMS Survey Launches
We have begun data collection from farmers and ranchers for the annual Agricultural Resource Management Survey.
ARMS looks at all facets of U.S. agricultural production, the well-being of farm households, farm finances, chemical usage, and various farm production characteristics.
The survey also collects detailed information on production practices, costs and returns for different commodities on a rotating basis.
In 2021, the survey will take a close look at corn, rice, dairy and organic dairy production in the United States.
At this time we have suspended in-person data collection. Farmers and ranchers are encouraged to complete their survey online at agcounts.usda.gov with the survey code that was mailed to them.
The survey is being conducted in three phases from May 2021 through April 2022.
The current (first) phase screens participants to ensure they have the commodities of interest that are needed to accurately represent the entire U.S. farm sector.
During the second phase, we will collect information on production practices and chemical use for specific commodities.
In the final phase, NASS will survey producers on farm income and production expenditures.
Online reporting is fast and secure. Producers can also complete and mail or fax the paper form to us. ARMS is a joint effort of NASS and USDA's Economic Research Service.

Blueberries
Maine wild blueberry growers saw a decrease in the value of the 2020 wild blueberry crop. Total production decreased to 47.4 million pounds, down 39% from 2019 production.
The price growers received for processing berries in 2020 averaged 60 cents per pound, up 11 cents per pound from 2019. Value of production of 2020 wild blueberries is $28.6 million, down 25% from the previous year.
New Jersey cultivated blueberry growers harvested 44.5 million utilized pounds from 8,400 acres. The value of utilized production was $75.1 million for 2020. Average price was $1.69 per pound, third nationally.
Cranberries
Massachusetts 2020 cranberry production totaled 2.06 million barrels in 2020, down 5% from 2019's production.
Growers harvested 12,700 acres of cranberries, 400 acres more than the previous year. Yields averaged 161.8 barrels per acre, compared with 175.6 barrels per acre a year earlier.
The 2020 price for Massachusetts fresh cranberries averaged $41.50 per barrel, down from $56.30 in 2019. The 2020 price for processed cranberries averaged $34.40 per barrel, up from $33.10 in 2019.
New Jersey cranberry growers produced over 528,000 utilized barrels from 3,000 acres.
Value of utilized production was $20.4 million. The average price was $38.50 per barrel, a dime behind the nation's price leader, Wisconsin.
Wisconsin continues to be the largest cranberry producing state with 4.63 million barrels in total utilized production.
Massachusetts growers reported crop failures due to drought and water shortages around harvest time, while some berries were noted to be of poor quality.
United States 2020 total cranberry utilized production is estimated at 7.79 million barrels, down slightly from 2019. Harvested acreage totaled 39,300, up 800 acres from the previous season.
The average yield, at 199.2 barrels per acre, was down 3% from the previous year. The United States 2020 price for fresh cranberries averaged $81.30 per barrel, and processed cranberries averaged $35.20 per barrel.
Northeast Dairy Products Summary
Total U.S. cheese production for 2020, excluding cottage cheeses, was 13.3 billion pounds, 0.9% above 2019 production. Wisconsin was the leading state with 25.6% of the production.
Butter production in the United States during 2020 totaled 2.15 billion pounds, 7.6% above 2019.
California was the leading state in butter production with 31.1% of the production.
New Jersey: Total cheese production, excluding cottage cheese, was 61.2 million pounds, 6% above 2019 production.
Production of regular (hard) ice cream totaled 1.07 million gallons, down 2% from 2019.
Ice cream mix totaled 4.2 million gallons, unchanged from the previous year.
New York: Total cheese production, excluding cottage cheese, was 870 million pounds, 5% above 2019 production.
American type cheese production totaled 144 million pounds, 1% above 2019 and accounted for 17% of total cheese in 2020.
Italian varieties, with 363 million pounds, were 2% above 2019 production and accounted for 42% of total cheese in 2020.
Mozzarella accounted for half of the Italian production, at 183 million pounds, 3% below 2019.
Creamed cottage cheese production totaled 102 million pounds, up 6% from the previous year.
Lowfat cottage cheese production totaled 95.5 million pounds, 2% above the 2019 production total.
Sour cream production during 2020 totaled 264 million pounds, 2% below last year.
Butter production during 2020 totaled 23.9 million pounds, down 10% from 2019.
Yogurt production during 2020 totaled 724 million pounds, up 7% from the previous year.
New York accounted for 16% of the United States production.
Regular ice cream production totaled 26.6 million gallons, up 4% from 2019. Ice cream mix totaled 15.1 million gallons, 4% above 2019.
Pennsylvania: Total cheese production, excluding cottage cheese, was 434 million pounds, up 1% from 2019.
Italian varieties, with 261 million pounds, were 1% below 2019 production and accounted for 60% of total cheese in 2020.
Mozzarella accounted for 83% of the Italian production, at 217 million pounds, 3% below 2019. Swiss cheese production was 7.24 million pounds, 10% below 2019 production.
Sour cream production during 2020 totaled 1.98 million pounds, up 25% from last year.
Butter production during 2020 totaled 97.4 million pounds, up 7% from 2019. Pennsylvania accounted for 5% of the United States production.
Nonfat dry milk production totaled 184 million pounds, up 2% from the previous year.
Regular ice cream production totaled 42.7 million gallons, up 5% from 2019.
Regular ice cream mix totaled 28.6 million gallons, 29% above 2019. Low-fat regular ice cream production, at 8.76 million gallons, was 1% above the 2019 production level.
Low-fat ice cream mix production totaled 5.28 million gallons, 1% above 2019. Sherbet mix was down 3% in 2020, at 674,000 gallons.
Vermont: Total cheese production, excluding cottage cheese, was 147 million pounds, 1% above 2019 production. Cheddar cheese production during 2020 totaled 101 million pounds, down 523,000 pounds from the previous year.
